Boston Bruins: Entry Draft Review

2012-07-27

It has been anything short of a busy week for the Bruins organization.  After spending a total of 92 million dollars over 4 years on the Sedin’s and Weber, the Bruins began to shift focus to upcoming MRFHL Entry Draft.

On the eve of the draft, the Bruins acquired promising defensemen Nick Leddy from the Carolina Hurricanes for the 28th overall pick in the draft prospects Mark Pysyk and Matt Puempel along with a 4th round pick.

The Bruins entered the draft hoping to address two of their positional needs both defense and the wing. With the 2nd overall pick the Bruins selected Ryan Murray. “We believe he will be ready for us in the near future. He is physically mature and has acute hockey sense responsible in all areas of the ice.”

In the very early going, the Bruins were rumored to have been shopping their fourth overall selection in return for a player who was ready to contribute.  When nothing materialized they were happy to select Morgan Rielly. “Our scouts were amazed at his combination of skill and hockey sense. We feel we got the two best defensemen available at the draft we are very pleased.”

After achieving their goal of addressing their needs on the blueline, the Bruins switched gears. The Bruins traded Matt Carle to New York for the 21st overall pick.

Going into the draft it was widely speculated Matt Carle priced himself out of Boston after a summer of intense contract negotiations.  “When we saw Teuvo Teravainen still on the board after 15 we felt we might have a chance to snag him. This is a kid we had pegged in the top 10 so we felt it was a win-win for both our organization and to give Matt a chance expand his role and we wish him all the best.”

The Bruins drafted Matt Finn at 24th overall and after trading 36 and 40 to New York they selected Sebastain Collberg at 28th overall.

In the second round the Bruins got bigger by picking up Stefan Matteau at measuring 6’11” and over 200 pounds. For their final pick the Bruins went off the board selecting highly skilled but injury proned Jarrod Maidens.

“We felt this year was a great success. We address all of our team needs. Last years draft crop contained many highly skilled forwards who are now in our system, this year’s draft was chalk full of quality defensemen and we felt we got the top two defenders not to mention one of most highly skilled forwards. We are very excited for the future prospects of the Bruins organization.”
