Oilers' Patience in Building Dynasty 2012-08-15 The Edmonton Oilers have decided that a long-term approach is what will be most beneficial to the franchise. After watching some of the high-priced contracts being handed out in the UFA process, the Oilers GM has decided that patience is going to be the best approach when building this team. "I don't see the reward in overspending on some of these guys 'just because we have the money available.' Some of these guys are 2nd line players being handed top line payouts and we just don't think that will make sense long-term" he said. Instead the Oilers will look to set their sights on the future, with a plan in place to be competitive year in and year out. While other clubs hamstring themselves with bad contracts, the Oilers will look to prey on the free agent market once other clubs don't have the cap space to make deals.
