Jets Trade Josi and Perron

2024-02-02

The Winnipeg Jets have been active in the trade market in the last week.   Lastnight David Perron was shipped out to Vegas for Paul Cotter and a 2nd rounder in 2025.  Then Roman Josi was shipped to the Montreal Canadien, who are in heavy pursuit of a cup this playoffs.  In return the Jets will recieve depth Defender Connor MacKay, 3rd 2024, and top Defensive prospect Olen Zellweger.

"First off I'd like to say thanks for al lthe years of service to both these players, they have been big parts of our hockey club.  Perron was here for 7 seasons, and always had shown chemistry in the top 2 lines.  High end offensive D man Josi was here for 4 years, he put up some huge points for us on the back end, they will be missed, but it was time to move on, make a change and re tool a little bit for the future.  With that said, expectations were high in Winnipeg.  6 points back of a playoff spot, and an expansion draft coming up, we had to decide if now was the time to pull the trigger on a few trades and re tool a bit.  We'eve had a good window to win it all with some of these guys, we came close and we had hoped we had a shot this year, I know we can still make it, but we are in a hole and other clubs seem to have a better chance right now. "  Says Schurman.

"We cleared up some salary, which we haven't had in years, and we got some draft picks the next 2 years to re group a bit while keeping a main core of players to hopefully still compete and be a playoff team.  Bringing in Olen Zellweger was a move I really wanted, I have always been a big fan of his play and look forward to seeing his development with the Jets.  He could be a top pair d man in the future, for sure top 4 with great offensive abilities.   Paul Cotter is a good hard checking, defensive player with a little offense.  Will be a good 3rd or 4th line player for us."
