Maple Leafs Acquire Defenceman Jakob Chychrun From Vancouver

2024-07-11

The Toronto Maple Leafs annouced yesterday that the club has acquired defenceman Jakob Chychrun from the Vancouver Canucks along with Vancouver's 19th overall selection in the 2024 MRFHL Entry Draft and Nashville's 108th (third round) selection.  In exchange, the Cancucks received defenceman Mikey Anderson, prospects Andrew Cristall (forward) and Felix Unger Sorum (forward) as well as Toronto's 2025 first and second round selections.

"You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs," said newly appointed Leafs general manager Clayton Hansler.  "I knew when I took the job that we were going to have to make some tough decisions.  The fan base here deserves better.  They deserve to see a team constructed with a clear identity, and I believe adding Jakob [Chychrun] to the roster begins to lay the foundation of that."

Chychrun, 26, appeared in 66 games during the 2023/24 season, split between the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild, and collected 25 points (2 goals, 23 assists) along the way.  The Boca Raton, Florida native, was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in 2016.

"We'd like to take a moment to thank Mikey Anderson for all his contributions to the team and encourage him not to let the door hit him in the ass on the way out."

The Maple Leafs head into the 2024 offseason reinvigorated by new management and eagerly looking forward to free agency opening in the next couple of weeks.
