Shark Bait?

2013-07-09

Welcome back to Sportsnet 690 Toronto, I'm your host Darren Millard, alongside Darren Kypreos. We have on the line with us, new Sharks GM Chris Fekete. Thanks for taking the time to join us. Your first 48 hours as GM has been very relentless. Anything else we should be on the look out for as the draft and free agency approaches?

"Well, after moving some of my players that I felt are running out of gas, I still have players like Hamhuis, Gionta and Luongo available, although theres been little action with Gionta. The interest in Hamhuis especially is astounding. I shouldnt be too surprised though as Hamhuis is a solid top defensemen in the league. He brings great experience on the backend and is definitely the kind of player that can give a competitive team that extra over the top edge. Luongo is still in my mind a top 10 goalie in the league, however, with our goal to get younger and reshape this team for the better, Luongo has shown in the past that he is a winner. His work ethic is second to none and he comes to play everyday. He's a world class champion in my eyes."

Kypreos: Obviously losing a guy like Andy to retirement is a huge blow but have u had any considerations who your captain or assistant captains might be right now?

"Well, right now, Gionta remains our captain until told otherwise. He's a great guy to have in the dressing room and goes out there and plays hard every shift, even if he is outweighed and gets pushed around. I have no idea what's gonna happen at the draft or in free agency. I havent considered who could be our assistants. Havent given it much thought. Only been here for a couple days. Im just taking things day by day and evaluating the roster to the best of my ability."

Millard: Well Chris, thanks for taking the time to come on the show. Best of luck in the offseason.

"Thanks guys, have a good one."
