Red Wings Have Huge Draft!

2014-07-24

Last year as Anthony Canario took over the the Red Wings the roster was in shambles. "When I became the Gm here I didn't get a good vibe on which direction the team should go. We had a weird mixture of players Some guys just starting their careers and other players at the tail end of theirs. My staff and I came up with a plan that we would rip apart what we had and would build our program back up."

It was along few months trading away players such as Chris Pronger , Mark Giordano , Claud Grioux , Justin Williams and Nick Grossman. On the flip side it saw us bring in the likes of Chris Kreider , Anthony Dunclair ,Tom Wilson , John Moore , Matt Donovan , Jimmy Vesey , Mario Lucia , Myles Bell, Calle Jarnkik , Chris Tierney , Kevin Hayes ,Duncan Siemens , Madison Bowey , Ian MaCoshen, Mike Reily , Petr Mrazek and a ton of picks in the next few drafts.

We really keyed in on guys that we think players the right away and gives us the best chance to win.

As for the draft I held the 5 th 6th and the 23rd picks in the first round.

With the 5th pick we went off the board with Nikolaj Ehlers. We had scouts following Nikolaj all year long. Our head scout simply fell in love with his skills, if he was playing in north America sooner he would have went 1st.

Ehlers is an explosive player who can beat even the quickest defenseman wide with speed. He plays on his off wing and creates chances with sharp cuts to the middle complemented by an explosive wrister. He's equally good with the puck and can handle it both at top speed and in traffic. He has Markus Naslunds skill , Pavel Bures Speed , Peter Forsbergs playmaking abilty , Patrick Kanes style of play and is a mix of Natan Mackinnon and Jonathan Drouin.

One pick later we selected Centerman Michael Dalcolle.

Michael is a Bull on the ice he uses his natural talents. Hes got an imposing frame and already shows great balance and strength on his skates. He plays a two-way game, battles hard and displays quick hands for a kid his size.

We really feel with these two picks that both of these players will play long and well with each other. They both bring different elements that they can feed off each other.

With the 23rd pick we selected Anthony DeAngelo.

Anthony is a smooth skating , offense-generating defenseman who has some very quick feet. He's slippery and very creative with the puck. His offensive awareness is incredible but is easlily out-muscled in his own end and needs to work on his positioning.

Fast foward to the First pick in the 4TH round and we selected Nikita Tyamkin .

Nikita is a huge defender at 6'7 with a cannon of a shot, Tryamkin is an intriguing prospect who has been oddly overlooked during two drafts . His size and puck skills are certainly interesting even for North American teams, who may have gleaned some good indications on his game during the recent WJC, where he was an important player on the Russian Blue line. Tryamkin should work on his skating and positional play, but has some good intangibles.

We all thought Gm Canario was done for the night , little did we know he was working the phone lines and wound up trading 5.5 million for 2 of the last 3 picks

With those pick he selected Joseph Gamberdella and Kevin Labanc

"I personally know both of these kids very well i grew up with Joe's brother. Both players played with each other thought the youth ranks. Joe is a player with some skill we see him as a bottom 6 player with some skill who will give his heart for the better of the team a leader in the making. Kevin is a player who we see can play on the 3rd line give us some solid minutes and lock down the other teams top players.
