Deadline day quite in New York

2015-03-20

While the New York Rangers remains quiet on the actual trade deadline, they did kick things off the day before with a blockbuster trade with the Montreal Canadians.

The Rangers acquired winger Gabriel Landeskog for wingers Nino Niederreiter and Nail Yakupov and a 2nd round pick in 2016. Rangers GM released the following statement regarding the trade:

"We are building this thing from the ground up and one of the things we wanted to do was identify a player that we feel that represents what we want to be as an organization as we evolve through this building process. We identifed that player that we can build around and we feel that Landeskog is that player. When we found out that Montreal would consider moving the young man, we had to inquire and in doing so, we had to be prepared to part with assets that would sting. Losing both Nino and Nail hurts no question, but when you want a certain player, there are choices to be made. In order to get talent, you have to give talent and when you are getting the player you want, paying a bit more of a premium to do that is well worth the additional cost."

*******UPDATE*******

A trade the organization thought was lost is cyber space wound up on the League Office desk today and approved. The deal was with none other than the same state rival New York Islanders.

The trades sees the Rangers sent minor league center Anton Lander and two 2015 draft picks (Van 2nd and Bos 4th) to the New York Islanders for defenceman Karl Alzner.

"With this deal we get a steady defenceman that playes a stay at home style. He's durable and responsible in the D zone and he takes good care of the front of the net so both Talbot and Rinne will have clear site to the shooter. A very young veteran defender that will be a staple on the blueline for years to come."
