2025 Eastern Conference Playoff Preview

2025-04-28

(B1) Carolina Hurricanes vs. (WC1) Detroit Red Wings

Season Series: 2-1 CAR  Last Playoff Meeting: First Meeting

We start off with what might be a tougher matchup than the Hurricanes expected. Both teams loaded up at the deadline picking up names like Mackenzie Weegar, Vincent Trocheck, Linus Ullmark and William Nylander, which only increased the star power in this series. As they headed down the stretch, Hurricanes locked down the division while the Wings completely sputtered out after Ullmark reached the max start limit. The Motor City are still looking for their first series win in the Evans era, while the Hurricanes have continued to push past the 1st round but continue to come up short. One of the more evident gaps in goal differential for these playoffs, a +43 for the Hurricanes and a -1 for Detroit.

Prediction: Hurricanes in 6

(B2) Washington Capitals vs. (B3) Columbus Blue Jackets

Season Series:  2-2 TIED Last Playoff Meeting: 2024 ECQF - CBJ in 7

Hey would you look at that, a rematch from last year! This is why this format works, you get those classic rivalry matchups like Washington & Columbus in the 1st round. The Capitals look to recover from the heartbreak of blowing a 3-1 series lead, including losing GM5 in OT. The two combatants took different approaches this year, with the Blue Jackets standing pat and letting things figure itself out, whereas Kirk in Washington was a mover and shaker all season to try to get a winning formula. Both teams were red hot down the stretch, so this should be a tight series, perchance we see another seven game series.

Prediction: Blue Jackets in 7 (again)

(D1) Florida Panthers vs. (WC2) Tampa Bay Lightning

Season Series: 3-1 FLA  Last Playoff Meeting: 2019 ECF - FLA in 5

Panthers are the best team in the Sunshine state, no notes….

Okay but seriously, the Lightning have had a stunning turnaround after finishing near or at the bottom the last handful of years. The boon from that is getting an elite talent in Connor Bedard who took the league by storm this year. The Panthers though are deeper at every spot on the roster though, which is ultimately why they are the Presidents’ Trophy winner. Not counting out those plucky Bolts, but Lightning won’t strike more than once this series.

Prediction: Panthers in 5

(D2) Toronto Maple Leafs vs. (D3) Buffalo Sabres

Season Series: 2-1 TOR  Last Playoff Meeting: 2023 ECQF - BUF in 4

Battle of the QEW! Two years ago Buffalo swept the Leafs in the playoffs, the team he used to lead, but now there’s someone new in charge and we’ll see if Ron has the same success against his former team. Toronto was not shy about making some big moves to remodel the squad, which hasn’t stopped for better or worse, shockingly dealing two defencemen off their pro roster at the deadline. Buffalo was a little more shrewd, letting most of the team that got them here to run out the season. Jesper Bratt is a big blow in the injury department for Toronto, who were counting on them for offence and will have to turn elsewhere for at least round 1. Buffalo has noted winner Patrick Kane, who despite being on the other side of 35 is still a menace in the offensive zone. One thing we’re confident in saying, this time it won’t be a sweep.

Prediction: Maple Leafs in 7
