ABBOTSFORD, BC — For the first time in franchise history, the Toronto Marlies are Calder Cup Champions.

In a stunning display of offensive firepower, the Marlies stormed into enemy territory and defeated the Abbotsford Canucks 7-3 in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals. The victory, sealed on Abbotsford’s home ice, silenced a hopeful crowd of 6,893 and kicked off will certainly be a summer-long celebration for a Toronto team that had dominated the regular season, and now emerged postseason victors.

Veteran forward Phillip Di Giuseppe was the hero of the night, recording a hat trick, while Finnish standout Mikael Pyyhtia added two goals and an assist. Goaltender Antti Raanta turnied aside 30 of 33 shots to backstop his team to the historic championship.

"This is everything we worked for," Marlies captain Dominik Kubalik said amidst the on-ice celebrations. "Every guy in that room bought in from day one. We faced adversity, we battled and we never, ever quit on each other. This feeling… it's indescribable. This isn't just for us; it's for all of Toronto."

The Marlies left no doubt about their intentions from the opening puck drop, ambushing the Canucks with a first-period onslaught that ultimately decided the contest. Philip Tomasino kicked off the scoring just 1:54 into the game, deflecting a Mikael Pyyhtia shot past a stunned Yaroslav Askarov to give Toronto a 1-0 lead.

The early goal energized the visitors, and they continued to press. Less than five minutes later, Pyyhtia got one of his own. After a Juuso Parssinen shot was stopped, Pyyhtia pounced on the rebound and snapped it home, doubling the lead at 6:42. Before the period was out, Di Giuseppe registered his first of the night, finding space in the slot and wiring a shot home at 14:14 to give the Marlies a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the intermission. Toronto outshot Abbotsford 12-5 in the frame, a testament to their complete control of the game’s opening 20 minutes.

Any hope for a Canucks comeback was quickly extinguished to start the second. With Abbotsford’s Tomas Nosek in the box for interference, the Marlies' power play went to work. Just 38 seconds into the period, Di Giuseppe blasted his second goal of the night, a power-play marker that chased Askarov from the Canucks' net. The young netminder was pulled after allowing four goals on 13 shots, with veteran Dustin Tokarski coming in as relief.

The change did little to stem the tide. At 3:19, Byron Froese deflected a Sampo Ranta shot to make it 5-0. The rout was on.

Abbotsford finally showed signs of life midway through the period. With Marlies defenseman Alex Goligoski in the box, Tomas Nosek got one back for the home side, scoring on the power play at 11:12 to break Antti Raanta’s shutout bid. But Pyyhtia responded just over two minutes later, scoring his second of the game to restore the five-goal cushion.

Frustrations boiled over shortly after. At 14:13, Di Giuseppe dropped the gloves with Canucks defenseman Marco Scandella in a spirited tilt, with both receiving fighting majors. The physical intensity remained high, with a flurry of minor penalties closing out a chaotic second period that saw the Marlies take a 6-1 lead.

The Canucks, to their credit, did not go quietly. They took advantage of another power play early in the third, with veteran defenseman Robert Bortuzzo finding the back of the net just 1:07 into the period to cut the lead to 6-2.

But once again, Di Giuseppe had the answer. Less than two minutes later, the veteran forward completed his hat trick, taking a pass from Jacob Lucchini and making no mistake to score his sixth goal of the playoffs. The goal sent the Marlies' bench into a frenzy, as players knew the championship was now firmly within their grasp.

A late goal from Canucks veteran Sam Gagner at 9:39 and another fight, this time between Scandella and Sampo Ranta, rounded out the action, but it was too little, too late for Abbotsford. As the final horn sounded, gloves, sticks, and helmets flew into the air as the Marlies poured onto the ice, mobbing Raanta in a sea of blue and white.

Pyyhtia’s two-goal, one-assist performance earned him First Star honours, while the hat-trick hero Di Giuseppe was named the Second Star, and captain Byron Froese’s two-point night earned him the Third Star.

"You dream of this moment as a kid," Di Giuseppe said, his voice hoarse. "To do it with this group of guys is special. We’re a family. We’re champions."

While not achieving the ultimate goal of lifting the Calder Cup, Canucks forward Sam Gagner did leave with some hardware. The veteran forward was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the MRFAHL's Playoff MVP.  Gagner gracefully accepted the award, to an overwhelming show of support by the fans at Abbotsford Centre.

For Abbotsford, it’s a bitter end to a remarkable postseason, the team entered the finals undefeated in the previous three rounds. But for the Toronto Marlies, it’s a coronation. Proof that regular season success, finishing with an MRFAHL best 98 points, was just a precursor to a greator prize. It's fitting that a team with a crown on their crest are the undisputed kings of the MRFAHL.
