Rangers beef up scoring

2010-09-25

After a failed attempt to acquire the best goal scorer over the last 5 years, the Rangers were able to get the 2nd best goal scorer over the last 5 years in Ilya Kovalchuk. (pictured below)

In addition to Kovalchuk, the Ranger also receive recent first round draft pick Brandon Gormley.

Heading to Pittsburgh is #1 defenceman Shea Weber (pictured)

"Trading the likes of Weber is probably the toughest decision I have had to make as a GM yet. However, to be able to land a talent like Kovalchuk is important to me as well. We feel that we have a very capable defence still and now with Kovy slotting onto the top line with Anze and Perry puts us in that much better shape to compete with the Chicagos and the Vancouvers and even with the Pittsburgh's of the world. Also, getting prospect Gormley in the deal was also something that we feel excited about. Here's a kid that was recently taken 11th in the MRFHL Entry Draft. A solid all around defenceman with potential for top pairing duties. We think that this is a good trade for the New York Rangers"

Those were the comments from Rangers GM Phil Grote
