Canucks shake up roster.

2013-03-18

For a team near the top of the standing you wouldn't expect them to be so busy on trade deadline day.  They were one of if not the most active team on the day, and can safely say they make the biggest block buster moves on the night.

They came early and often:

To Tor - Curtis Glencross & Brandon McMillan (p) for Alex Burrows & Johan Motin

Glencross is a ufa at the end of the season and they did not expect to resign him.  The opportunity to re-acquire Alex Burrows who is signed to a multi-year deal was hard to pass up.

To Pho - Kyle Cumiskey for Adrian Aucoin

Aucoin was acquired to provide some insurance going into the playoffs.

To Bos - Z Chara, Henrick Zetterberg and DET3 for Shea Weber, Shane Doan and Bos 4 (14)

Easily the biggest deal on the night.  The Canucks were able to acquire the coveted Shea Weber who most consider the cream of the crop in terms of Dmen.  Doan is a gritty leader who will leave everything on the ice for his team. Obviously this came at a cost.  Chara was a dominant force for the Canucks and Zetterberg is a top notch forward.  Both played well for the Canucks during their time there.

To Phi - Adrian Aucoin for PHI3 (14)

Although Aucoin was only acquired earlier in the day, his return to Vancouver was short.

To Bos - PIT4 for Rob Scuderi

Scuderi provided another option to the Canucks bottom pairing.  He knows what it takes to win a cup.  Having a friendlier cap hit then Aucoin didn't hurt either.

To CLB - Alex Burrows for David Desharnais, Stanislav Galiev (p) and Van4(14)

Like Aucoin before him, rumblings of another potential significant deal led the Canucks to move Alex Burrows.  Desharnais provides the Canucks with a solid face off man.  He also gives the Canucks a more cap friendly option on the bottom 6.  Galiev has the tools to become a solid top 6 forward, but will need time to develop his all around skills before becoming an regular roster player.

To DET - Nikitia Nikitin, Troy Brouwer, Anthony Camara (p), Anton Rodin & Van1(14) for Pavel Datsyuk and Det3(14)

Datsyuk is one of the brightest hockey minds in the game and the Canucks expect him dominate at both ends of the ice.  He gives the Canucks yet another threat up front. Although he is a ufa in the off season the Canucks were willing to move the boat load of assets to acquire him.

The Canucks are hoping these are the moves that will help them make another run for the cup.  We will see as the season unfolds.
