Cap’ is Back!

2026-07-21

TORONTO, ON — The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has signed forward John Tavares to a four-year contract extension ensuring the Captain will remain in the blue-and-white for years to come.

“There’s no replacing a guy like Johnny,” said General Manager Clayton Hansler earlier in the day during a press availability. “He truly brings everything to the rink every day, and leaves it all on the ice every night.  He’s the sort of leader that young guys look up to, our skill guys want to play with and the other veterans on our team respect.  I couldn’t envision a world that didn’t have John leading our team out onto the ice every night.”

The Mississauga, ON, native was acquired by the Maple Leafs during the summer of 2021 from Chicago, sending a bushel of picks back the other way that included a first, a second, a third and two fourths.  Since then, Tavares has played in 388 games as a Maple Leaf, scored 156 goals and collected 267 assists for 423 points, and led the Leafs to their first President’s Trophy and second Stanley Cup during the 2025-26 season.

“It’s something special to play for the team you grew up dreaming about.  I don’t have words to explain my appreciation for Clay and all he’s done since arriving, the guys for making this a place I want to come to every day and the incredible fans for their support night-in and night-out.  There’s nothing like winning in Toronto and I don’t think I would’ve gotten this far without my family by my side and my magic amulet around my neck.”

In keeping with league policy, the details of Tavares’ contract were not released — however a very quick search on the MRFHL website indicated that it’s a four year deal carrying an annual value of $7.6M.

It’s left to be seen whether the age-defying captain can keep up the level of consistency that has come to define his career, but all doubters have been proven wrong up to this point.

“You just don’t get rid of a former first overall pick,” Hansler quipped. “Here’s a guy that’s spent the better part of five years having people say that he’s ‘bound to slow down’ but he still performs at an incredible rate.  I know we had to do a little gymnastics to get him signed, but even with the pick and the money, I feel we got quite a deal.”

In separate transactions, the Maple Leafs brought back restricted free-agents Jesper Bratt and Louis Crevier, both of which hoisted the Stanley Cup, as well as Calder Cup champions Tye Kartye, Henry Thrun and Jonathan Aspirot.

Also — the Toronto Maple Leafs organization would like to extend their sincerest congratulations to Minnesota Wild General Manager Jesse Brouillette on the birth of his first child.  We’ll be sure to include a baby-sized Maple Leafs jersey along with our next trade proposal.
