Hawks deal veteran Regehr

2010-08-01

Prior to this mornings draft the Chicago Blackhawks announced that they had traded defenceman Robyn Regehr to the New York Rangers. In return the Hawks added young forward Steve Downie along with prospect defenceman Brian Dumoulin. "This was a very difficult move for us to make, Robyn has been a huge part of both our championship team, and his leadership will be sorely missed. Unfortunately the reality of the salary cap forced our hand in making this move." said GM Semonick. Moving a player of Regehrs standing in the dressing room was no doubt a troubling move, however management has to be happy with the assets they added. Downie is a young forward with a lot of upside who can help a team in a lot of different ways. He adds grit, and is a nightmare to play against. He relishes his reputation as one of the most hated players in the league. He also owns intriguing offensive upside. He will challenge for a roster spot immediately, and could eventually crack the top-6. Dumoulin is definitely more than a throw in, as he comes off an excellent freshman year at powerhouse Boston College. He tallied an impressive 22 points in 42 games as one of the youngest players playing at the NCAA level. He boasts impressive size at 6'3, and also skates exceptionally well for a big man. He is likely at least 3 years from challenging for a roster spot, however with the teams riches on the blueline they can afford to wait.
