Thrashers' run for the cup continues!

2009-05-12
Atlanta. After an exciting match and a 4-3 win with Viktor Kozlov's goal after 14:55 in the second overtime over the Tampa Bay Lightning in game 6 of the eastern conference finals, the Atlanta Thrashers are the first qualified team for this year's Stanley Cup finals.

The Thrashers already played 20 playoff games so far and their surprising run to the finals is one of the big stories of this year's MRFHL season. Started with the new - pretty unknown - general manager Stefanie Bieli, the team already showed some quality in the pre-season but insiders were not sure, if Bieli and the team had the potential to move to the top. Now, the "Swiss Miss" is looking forward to her first Stanley Cup final appereance of the career. In an interview with the Atlanta News Channel Bieli was asked, if she would prefer the Hawks or the Sharks as their opponent in the finals. "First of all, I am just happy, that we did it to the finals", Bieli responded, "but if I could choose, I'd prefer a real Swiss final against the Sharks and my friend Marco Christ, who does a great job in California too."

Seems that the new general managers from Switzerland shook the MRFHL in a really positive way. Not to forget Florin Liesch who reached the playoffs with a fairly weak Canes roster and Reto Dubach, GM of the New York Islanders, battling in the Calder Cup semifinals with the Sound Tigers against the Rochester Americans while cup defender Rafik Soliman with the Manchester Monarchs already advanced to the finals.
