Panthers Draft Recap- Part 2 of 2( Continued)

2009-06-30
GM’s Note:

“Well I would just like to say, holding two picks in a row is a great feeling. Because you get to take two really good players without worrying if the other will drop to your next pick. Now to Eric, he is a big body and is a defensive d-man that we really needed. We have plenty of offensive guys on the back end now and some other defensive d-men that could potentially make the league but with Eric we feel he will definitely reach the pro level and be our shut down guy. If he just grows into his body, he has all the skills to be a great shut down man but hopefully he ups his physical play. Now we understand he’s a few years away but I think we may have one of the best D-cores in the league in a few years and he will be a big part of it.”

Scouting Report:

Andrej is a strong two-way player. He battles it out all over the ice and is strong on the wall and on the cycle. He has good hands and can dangle. Nestrasil’s shot is his biggest asset as it is both hard and accurate. He plays with a gritty edge and uses his size to protect the puck and bully his way to the net. He distributes the puck effectively and he back checks hard. He is willing to block shots and plays a very smart game.

Gm’s Note:

“Andrej was a different pick for us, but very similar to the others. Yes he is European but like all our other picks, he plays a smart game and he is big so size is not a problem. We were happy with his season and we are glad he came to Canada to play junior and the exposure to the North American game really helped him. He is a little bit of a project and we hope he doesn’t go back to Europe as we see him similar to Morin, as in a guy who can put the puck in the net and rack up points. If you really watched this guy play, you could stick the name Johnson on the back of his jersey and never realize he’s from the Czech Republic and well that’s what we like from him, he’s built for the North American game.”

Scouting Report:

An offensive defender, who takes chances in looking to create offence, he has good speed and offensive creativity. Tyson is aggressive on his pinches and solid overall mobility and also possesses good speed. Tyson makes good tape-to-tape passes and has a decent shot. Tyson uses his mobility and has an active stick in his own zone.

GM’s Note:

“With a name like Tyson you would expect a big tough D-man right, wrong. Tyson complements the defensive system we have going forward as a quick, agile defenseman who can put the puck in the net. He was a solid pick at this point and just continues to add to our defensive strength.”

Scouting Report:

A meat and potatoes type of winger, full of drive and intensity. Taylor plays with a bull in a china shop mentality. He has great hands that allow him to dominate down low and protects the puck well and works hard along the wall. He shows smarts in his decisions and a willingness to play a full three zone game.

GM’s Note:

“A similar player to a bunch of guys we took last year. Taylor is a guy who we hope to fill the bottom six but at the same time put up the points. If not he’s a guy who can be a game changer and change the tempo of the game, but with a hit or a scrum. I saw a lot of improvement in him this season with the Storm and I expect him to upgrade his game over the next few years and try to get a spot on this team.”
