Rangers sign defenceman

The New York Rangers dipped into the UFA pool and signed defenceman Mathieu Schneider to a 1 year deal, as per club policy, terms were not disclosed.

"Matt is a professional, the way he goes about playing the game, the way he conducts himself off ice, the way he and his agent handle contract negotiations. It's this type of individual that I want to make sure I surround my younger defencemen with so that they can learn on how to carry themselves in the same situations. We think that Matt's presence alone is going to do wonders for Brian Lee, Erik Johnson and Victor Hedman. What he capable of doing on the ice is also going to be very helpful as we attempt to re-tool and get back after the Playoffs."

Asked if he was done on the signing front, the GM stated "I may look to add a few minor pieces, but more likely they will be added for the farm team in case of injury. I will be looking for a goalie to back up Khabibulin, but beyond that I think we are set."

This most recent developement seems to spell the end of Jay McKee's tenure as a New York Ranger as the team will now look to move some contracts to fit today's signing.
