Alexander Ovechkin: Forever Young

2026-03-10
Alexander Ovechkin: Forever Young.

Denver, CO -- With the MRFHL trade deadline this Thursday, the Colorado Avalanche are coming off a critical stretch that may have determined the direction of both their season and their roster. At the center of that discussion is elite sniper and future Hall-of-Famer Alexander Ovechkin, whose future with the organization remains uncertain as the club evaluates its position in the standings and its long-term plans.

Ovechkin, 40, is in his fourth season with Colorado and remains one of the league’s most accomplished players. The Avalanche however haven't accomplished....anything since The Great 8's arrival. In a season marked by defensive inconsistencies and instability in goal, the Avs currently sit three points outside a playoff spot. The streaky play has only made it more difficult for the team to gain sustained momentum in a competitive Stefan Division. The Bongsnore Division knows what that word means, right? Com-pe-tit-ive. Could Colorado get hot and somehow sneak into a postseason berth? Think of the revenue! Wait, you mean a potential first round matchup against Utah or Winnipeg—two of the league’s top teams in the West? A pretty significant challenge and one Colorado shouldn't limp into.

The Avs attempted to address its goaltending concerns last month by re?acquiring Frederik Andersen to take some weight of Calvin Pickard. This was a move that required sending goaltender Alexander Georgiev to the Buffalo Sabres. You know, the goaltender they previously TRADED to acquire Georgiev. GM Hiemstra fixed his mistake of a contract and took Georgiev off the books for next season but lost even more draft capital in the process and are back to square one with the Frederik Anderson also expiring at the end of this season. The Georgiev to Buffalo trade added another chapter to the club’s ongoing lack of stability in net and mismangement of assets. While doing so, the team moved out one of Ovechkin's closest friends, and fellow Russians on the roster.

Beyond Ovechkin, the Avalanche have several pending unrestricted free agents whose futures are also being evaluated ahead of the deadline. Taylor Hall was shipped off to Boston this afternoon, even though the sim will force his ass to dress tonight. Defenseman Cam Fowler, acquired earlier this season, made an immediate impact during his first two weeks with the club but has struggled to regain that form since the return of Brendan Dillon from injury. Frank Vatrano has seen his name circulate in trade discussions throughout the year, seeking an expanded role and additional ice time that Colorado has been unable to provide. Jake Evans has also drawn interest from other teams, though the Avalanche are expected to be selective given his value as a defensively reliable center and key penalty?killing contributor. He's a dawg.

League interest in Ovechkin has intensified in recent weeks, with multiple teams contacting Colorado regarding his availability. The Avalanche are believed to be exploring all options, aiming to balance organizational priorities with respect for Ovechkin’s legacy and personal goals.

The superstar sniper has always expressed a desire to return to Russia to conclude his career, a sentiment he reiterated in a late February interview with Sports Express. We believe this interview will be available in the coming weeks.

He's also made it no secret he wants to compete for the Stanley Cup. Whether Ovechkin remains with Colorado beyond the deadline—or with the MRFHL beyond this season—remains an open question for all parties. With several roster decisions looming and the trade window closing very soon, the coming days, hours and tonight's game in Ball Arena are all expected to play a defining role in shaping both the Avalanche’s immediate future and potential final chapter of one of the game’s GR8 ones..

Alexander Ovechkin: Forever Young
Sometimes I run, Sometimes I hide, Sometimes I'm scared of you, But all I really want is to hold you tight, Treat you right, Be with you day and night, Baby, all I need is time.
